Windsurfing: Avon Beach Wind Direction: SW Wind Stength: F5-6 Surf / Sea State: Wavey Air Temperature: 13 Sea Temperature: 13 Weather: Overcast, rain Max Speed: Distance Covered:
Spoke to Juan in the morning, about 9, thinking maybe Hayling, but the tide
there was high at 12, so would be totally horrible in a bit of a wind, so
we headed for Avon Beach instead, along with lots of other people - Roger
T, Mike T, Carl, Andrew (who didn't sail - he'd been out there yesterday on
a 5.5), Jon L, and a cast of thousands of wind-starved Sarf Coasters.
SW/WSW which looks pretty light being nearly offshore at Avon, until you
get out :). Went out on 4.7 and 91l, being a bit cautious, and yes, it was
hard work. Probably a bit overpowered actually, since Big Juan on a 5 and
he was pretty powered up!
Bashed in and out, incredibly hard work, arms very tired, hanging on far
too much, but struggled with footstraps and silly boots - far too used to
just slipping the feet in and out, but sure feet would have been cold
without. Stopped for lunch - Juan sailed on! However, perseverance paid off
- it got easier as the tide dropped a bit even though the wind came up a
bit. Finally ended up catching some small waves, turning onto them, turning
up and down - very satisfying! All in all a good session - it's moot
whether it would have been better on the 77l with a 4.0! Learned a lot from
watching Roger and Juan, and nearly made a few inside gybes - the outside
ones were far too hairy, with extreme chop and vast gusts, so did a fair
bit of swimming on the outside! Confidence defo increased - I'm still here,
no rescue, and managed to hold down a 4.7 despite gusts and the rest. So
good. Big grin!
